Diarrhea

Diarrhea is fairly common in dogs and usually does not constitute a medical emergency. Exceptions are if the diarrhea contains quantities of blood (see “Bloody Diarrhea or Stool,” above); is explosive; lasts for more than twenty-four hours; or is accompanied by other symptoms such as vomiting, loss of appetite, and signs of pain or illness such as listlessness or depression. In these cases it can be a symptom of poisoning (see pages 47 to 48), a systemic illness, or a serious infectious disease such as distemper (see page 58) or parvovirus (see page 58).
